Gujarat boasts of plenty of wonderful and diverse trekking options that make it somewhat a trekker’s paradise. From unconventional beach treks top high resolve mountain treks to pilgrimage treks Gujarat has its fair share of trekking variety. One such popular trekking spot in Gujarat is the Pavagadh Hill Trek.
Pavagadh in itself is a hill station that is located in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat and is 46kms away from the town of Vadodara. The entire area of Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park became a UNESCO World heritage site in 2004. Champaner is the village below the Pavagadh hill.
Pavagadh is a famous hillock with it being a busy pilgrimage site that is also popular among travellers, adventure seekers, trekkers. The pilgrimage is aimed to reach the Kalikamata Temple that is located on the zenith of the hill.
Height of Pavagadh hill is 822 metres and it is best visited during monsoons with the rainy season bringing out the beauty of its lush green landscape. The trek up the hill is moderately easy with provisions of ropeway available for those who cannot make the climb.
The trekking route goes around the hill passing by numerous historical monuments. The further up we move various lakes and ponds can be seen across the hills. The hill becomes narrower on getting closer to the temple. The ropeway drops of the visitors at the point where the steps begin. A total of around 250 steps need to be climbed in order to reach the Kalikamata Temple. The climb can be daunting as during peak season a little misstep can cause stampedes on the worn out steps.
The temple is around a 1000 years old and is one of the 51 Shaktipeeth temples across India. The temple houses sculpture of three goddesses and this temple boasts of a huge number of dedicated devotees. The base of the route also has a few Jain temples located. The hill boasts of scenic views of the lakes and ponds from the top.
The complete trek on a day with less number of travellers is around 3-4 hours. Pavagadh hill is a must-visit when visiting Champaner.
